Conyers, GA Youth Qualifies to Represent USA in Naples, Italy CONGRATULATIONS TO WILLIAM "ANDREW" SCHMETZER FOR WINNING THE GOLD MEDAL IN BOYS 16-18 HARD STYLE MUSICAL WEAPONS & THE GOLD MEDAL IN BOYS 16-18 HARD STYLE MUSICAL FORMS!
William “Andrew” Schmetzer recently took part in the selection process for the opportunity to represent the United States in Naples, Italy at the WAKO Youth World Championships to be held in September 2008. The tryouts were held in Providence, RI in conjunction with the Ocean States Grand National Karate Tournament the weekend of April 6th – 8th. He qualified and was selected as a member of the WAKO USA Junior National Team, Andrew will participate in Musical Weapons, Musical Forms and Semi-Contact fighting events. Andrew will be joined by his brother Kristopher who was selected to the Team in July. Andrew is the son of Mark and Vickie Schmetzer who reside in Conyers. On May 17th he earned the Rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt under Jim Fuller of Jim Fuller’s U.M.A.S. Karate. Andrew is also a member of World Champion K.I.C.K. Team located in Columbus, GA and trains under World Champions Young Won and Marcel Jones. Andrew also trains for fighting under World Champion Tony Young of Union City, GA. Andrew is a NASKA (North American Sport Karate Association) World Champion and competes at the local, regional, national, and international level. He is currently ranked number 1 in the World in NASKA Boys 14-15 Black Belt Extreme Forms, Musical Forms, Creative Forms, & Creative Weapons and # 2 in Fighting divisions. WAKO is the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations. WAKO World Championships are held every two years with youth (18 and under) and adults (19-45) on separate years. The last junior competition was held in Croatia in 2006. The USA brought home 3 Gold Medals, 4 Silver Medals and 5 Bronze Medals. The last adult World Championship was held in Coimbra, Portugal in 2007. The USA brought home 1 Gold Medal, 2 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals. More information on the team can be found at www.wakousa.org. Unlike most countries, the WAKO USA Junior National Team is not sponsored. Therefore, we are asking for your support of Andrew to represent the USA. Fund raising efforts are under way and will continue through the summer to help offset the costs of participating at the World Championships.
